Immune system in action

For the body to bring about an immune response to a foreign protein many complex interactions take place. Different cell types in the spleen interact with one another to cause a strong, specific immune response. These confocal images capture just some of these interactions taking place. Exactly how and where they all occur is currently the subject of intensive study. The inset image shows a central pale yellow B cell surrounded by dendritic cells and T cells (the green cell on the left and two red cells at the top). The larger image shows a lower magnification of the same part of the spleen where the colours highlight regions where different cell types and interactions predominate. B cells are a subset of white blood cells that produce antibodies. T cells are also white blood cells. They have many roles one of which is to help B cells in their production of antibodies.
