Little green algae dividing

Dividing desmids (Micrasterias), captured on a photomicrograph halfway through cell division, which usually takes place at night. These little green algae live in freshwater, especially in acidic bog pools. The minute cells are constricted in the middle, each half being a mirror image of the other, often with highly ornate outlines. Cell division begins with the division of the nucleus, which lies at the centre of the cell, followed by the formation of two new hemicells. To start with, these are mere blobs, but over the course of a few hours they grow into almost exact copies of the other halves, at which point the two new cells separate.
