The Fluent Heart
Dr Philip Kilner and Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan, heart imaging specialists; Wayne McGregor, Random Dance Company; Sir John Tavener, London
Production Award: £110 000

This is a collaboration between composer Sir John Tavener, heart imaging specialist Dr Philip Kilner and Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan, heart imaging specialists, and choreographer Wayne McGregor towards the creation of an original work on the theme of the heart. The music and dance production will be supplemented by smaller-scale scientific-artistic presentations, and by dissemination of material in recorded, written and illustrated forms. Images and sounds of the living heart will inform the work, in which the heart is to represent a symbol of humanity and the divine, as well as an organ central to the life of each individual.

Image:
Drawings by Philip Kilner of paths of flow through the heart, showing the ventricles relaxed (left) and contracting (right). Blood from the body and lungs returns to each side of the heart whose cycles of relaxation and contraction propel blood on to the lungs and body, respectively. The streaming, swirling movements of blood continue day and night, life-long, maintaining unity in the complexity of the body, and continuity through continual change
