Visiting Time

Visiting Time is an exploration of the human, experiential and scientific dimensions of living with the consequences of genetic inheritance. It is a research and development project which will investigate how drama and performance can be used to broaden understanding of genetic inheritance and the role of biomedical science in the diagnosis and treatment of genetically inherited disorders. Secondary school pupils will undertake research with health professionals and engage in drama activities with a performance artist, Mark Storor. They will explore the possibilities of developing performance in environments such as healthcare buildings, hospitals or GP surgeries. A public discussion event with healthcare professionals, patients, educationalists, artists and students will take place at the end of the research process in June 2004.

New Genesis
The New Genesis research project by Wyrd Arts employed different artform activities to encourage young people to explore the ethical issues of human genetic engineering and identify the aspects they found relevant. Two different approaches were undertaken: a day with a Year 11 group at a school in Northumberland and a series of workshops with a Year 7 class at a school in Manchester. The Year 7 group developed a devised theatre piece and staged three work-in-progress performances. Wyrd Arts is exploring ways to develop the work.

Y Touring will commission four experienced playwrights to write four plays exploring aspects of the impact of biomedical science on society, for young people and children to perform. The playwrights will explore the issues with scientists and young people in a laboratory day. The plays will have pilot productions by four London youth theatres/schools and be published as downloadable pdfs on the Genetic Futures website.
