Who can enter?
The competition is open to UK citizens of all ages. There are three entry categories:

1. Individual entry - over 18
This category is open to anyone over the age of 18. Individuals are asked to enter a single photograph accompanied by a caption of up to 50 words. Together, they should address the question, 'How is science changing us?'.

First prize will be photographic equipment to the value of £1000 and one year's membership to the Royal Photographic Society. There are two runners-up prizes of photographic equipment to the value of £500.

2. Individual entry - under 18
This category is open to anyone under the age of 18. Individuals are asked to enter a single photograph accompanied by a caption of up to 50 words. Together, they should address the question, 'How is science changing us?'.

First prize will be photographic equipment to the value of £1000 and your winning image displayed on www.bbc.co.uk. There are two runners-up prizes of photographic equipment to the value of £500.

3. School entry
Secondary schools are invited to send an entry, of up to seven images, representing the work of a group of up to ten individuals from within a school. Collectively the images must address the question 'How is science changing us?' and entries will be judged as a group. Each image should be accompanied by a caption of up to 50 words.

The group must select one of these images to be their poster image. It should represent the work of the group, in the same way that a poster can be used to represent an exhibition.

Schools can make more than one entry to this competition. First prize will be photographic equipment of the school's choosing to the value of £2000 and a BBC media workshop for the class of the winning group.
Two runners-up schools will receive photographic equipment of their choosing to the value of £1000.
Winning pupils from all schools will win £50 worth of photography equipment.

All categories
Prizes including BBC books, BBC DVDs and backstage tours around BBC Television Centre will be awarded to a selection of the best entrants who do not win first or runners-up prizes, in all categories. Winning entries will be displayed in a national exhibition to be held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, and at science centres around the UK in 2005.

Judging
A panel of expert judges drawn from the worlds of science, photography, science communication and the arts will select the winning entries.

The selection criteria include:

  • originality
  • creativity
  • ability to portray an aspect of how biomedical science is changing us
  • demonstrable thought behind photographic content and composition.
