Actin
A rat basophilic leukemia cell, showing the network of filaments of the protein actin (red), which form part of the internal skeleton (cytoskeleton) of the cell. The cytoskeleton is directly responsible for such movements as the crawling of cells on a surface, muscle contraction, and the many changes that occur in the shape of a developing vertebrate cell.

The movie was constructed from 44 individual images, starting at the top and going through to the bottom of the cell. The computer software then puts all the images together to form an image of the whole cell. This is then rotated through 90 degrees (it is lying flat under the microscope) and projected as it is seen now.

Images were taken on a Zeiss LSM510 Confocal Microscope.
