Retinal ganglion cell and blood vessels
The white retinal ganglion cell in the centre, is a nerve cell that forms part of the optic nerve. Several small blood vessels are passing nearby. Red blood cells are visible moving along these vessels and, in this image, are seen in yellow. These red blood cells are many times smaller than the ganglion cell. The red spots are gap junctions - specialized attachments between adjacent cells in the surrounding tissue. This image has been reconstructed from confocal microscopic images.
