Drosophila eye and antenna imaginal disc
A series of images showing an imaginal disc from a fruit fly (Drosophila) larva. This is one of a pair of structures in the fly larva that grow and develop into the eyes and antennae of the adult fly. This process begins unseen in the larva and is completed dramatically during pupation and metamorphosis. The red dye (left) shows the overall structure of the disc and the green (centre) shows the regions where a gene involved in the growth of the disc is active. The green line across the lower part shows a wave of cell division moving up the disc, revealing, in its wake, the first signs of the adult form: the grid-like array of cells beneath it are the beginnings of the facets present in the adult compound eye.
