Vaginal lining
A colour-enhanced, scanning electron micrograph of the lining of the upper vagina. This lining is constantly being renewed with the cells closest to the surface sloughing off in a similar manner to skin. These surface cells are broad and flat, and the boundaries between them are visible as fine raised ridges with each 'flake' comprising several cells. Five red blood cells are visible sitting on the epithelial surface.
