Atomic force microscope image of a myosin molecule
An image of the muscle protein myosin, taken by operating in a liquid environment. The two heads (top left) and the tail of the molecule are clearly visible. The heads act like the hooks of a ratchet system, causing muscle filaments to slide past each other to shorten the muscle during contraction. The molecule is about 150 nanometres (0.00015mm) long and the colours represent the height of the protein above the level of the background.
