Leaking blood vessel in the brain
The black hole is a blood vessel in the brain whose contents, shown in red, are leaking out into the surrounding tissue. This kind of leakage is typical of conditions such as stroke, the brain damage associated with AIDS, as well as exposure to various toxins such as the explosive dinitrobenzene (due to its toxicity, this explosive is now rarely used in the West but is still commonly used in developing countries). When the nerve cells in the brain, shown in blue, are exposed to abnormal, toxic substances that have escaped from the damaged vessel, an inflammatory reaction takes place. This leads to the death of these nerve cells and the gradual degeneration of brain function. Glial cells are the supporting cells in the brain and are rapidly lost from the damaged region - only a few of these cells (stained yellow/green) are still visible here.
