Shigella bacteria (bright pink) infecting human intestinal cells. Shigella invades the intestinal lining causing the diarrhoea and rapid dehydration typical of bacterial dysentery. The bacteria hijack the cell's internal skeleton (green) to get inside the cell, move around within it, and spread into adjoining cells, as several can be seen doing here.
