Journals frequently used by Wellcome Trust grantholders: summary of publisher open access policies

Overview
Detailed below is a list of the journals frequently used by Wellcome Trust grantholders, along with advice – at the journal title level – on how best to comply with the Trust’s open access requirements in a way that also meets the journals’ publishing policy.

It should be made clear that this list simply represents popular journals that Wellcome Trust grantholders have published in recently.Grantees can continue to seek publication in any journal which has a Wellcome compliant open access (OA) policy.

If the journal you are seeking to publish in is not included in this list, please consult the Sherpa/RoMEO database to determine its open access policy.

Explanation of terms
In recommending how best to comply with the Trust’s OA policy, the list of journals details a number of different options. These are described below:

Description

Explanation

Author-pays option – Select “name of publisher OA programme” OA option

Many publishers offer an open access option where, in return for a fee, the publisher will deposit the final version of the published article in PMC and UKPMC and make this available at the time of publication.

Where available, Wellcome Trust grantholders are encouraged to select this option.See our Authors’ FAQ page for more information on how these open access costs will be met.

No compliant option

Publishers of these journals have not yet developed a model which allows Wellcome funded grantees to meet their open access obligations.

See our Authors’ FAQ on what to do in such cases.

In all cases the Wellcome Trust is in contact with these publishers and trying to negotiate a compliant policy.

Self-archive author manuscript using UKPMC+

Many publishers allow authors to self archive the author manuscript version of their article (not the final, published version) and make these freely available from PMC/UKPMC within 6 months of publication.

Grant holders should archive these papers using UKPMC+ manuscript submission ( UKPMC+).

No action required – Publisher deposits final paper in PMC

Publishers of these journals will automatically deposit final papers in PMC without any action necessary from the author.Payment of a fee is not required.
