Wellcome Trust Centres for Global Health Research
5 February 2013

The Centres will support researchers working in public health and tropical medicine to develop their careers, and foster interchange between institutions in the UK and those based in low- and middle-income countries. Their aim is to support clinicians and non-clinicians from the UK, as well as researchers from low- and middle-income countries, and to provide opportunities for institutions to develop their expertise in public health and tropical medicine.
Support for these Centres does not include research funds but gives some core support to allow them to mentor and guide researchers interested in building an academic career in these fields to submit high-quality fellowship applications to Wellcome Trust schemes.
The Directors of the Centres are:
- Liverpool: Professor David Lalloo
- Imperial: Professor Michael Levin
- Bloomsbury: Professor David Mabey
- Cambridge: Professor David Dunne
- Brighton and Sussex Medical School: Professor Melanie Newport.
These Centres build upon the success of the Wellcome Trust's Centres for Research in Clinical Tropical Medicine, which have been supported since 1994 to attract UK clinicians into academic research careers, developing and supporting the UK's recognised leadership in the field.
