Wellcome Trust expands the Interview Panel for Investigator Awards and senior level Fellowships

25 September 2012

The Wellcome Trust today announces an expansion of the core membership of its Interview Panel. Professor Nish Chaturvedi of Imperial College London has been appointed as a third co-chair of the Panel to complement the expertise of current co-chairs Sir Paul Nurse (Royal Society and CRUK London Research Institute) and Professor Deborah Smith (University of York).

Professor Chaturvedi has served on the Panel since its initial meeting, and her appointment as a co-chair, along with that of further experts in public health and population studies, underlies the Trust's commitment to supporting public health research.

The Interview Panel, formerly called the Selection Panel, is responsibile for making the final decisions on the interviews of candidates for Investigator Awards and senior level Fellowships. From November 2012, the Panel will assess all shortlisted applicants for Investigator Awards and Principal and Senior Research Fellowships, necessitating additional core Panel members to cover the increase in the number of interviews to be conducted.

The Trust has expanded the Interview Panel core membership to include additional expertise in public health with a view to encouraging individuals in eligible organisations with important research questions in public health to submit applications for personal support.

Nish Chaturvedi qualified in medicine in London, specializing first in internal medicine and then in public health. She began her research career at UCL in 1988, moving to a chair in clinical epidemiology at Imperial College London in 2000.

Her research interests include understanding the risks and complications of diabetes and determining reasons for interethnic differences in cardiometabolic disease. She also performs clinical trials testing interventions to reduce the burden of disease in these groups, both in the UK and in low- and middle-income countries.
