Get ‘In the Zone’ at BT London Live: London 2012-themed sport science experience is part of Victoria Park line-up
27 July 2012

Testing your strength in a hand-cycle race, sharpening your reaction times and racing down a running track are just some of the activities to try out, and an exhilarating live science show will provide entertainment as people wait to be put through their paces. Throughout the experience, visitors make short videos of their performance in each of the activities, which they can download from the website and share with friends and family.
Designed and delivered by the At-Bristol science and discovery centre, more than 27 000 people have already taken part in 'In the Zone' throughout its UK tour, which has so far taken in agricultural shows, music festivals and an airshow. Visitors have included Sir Steve Redgrave, Paralympian Kelly Gallagher and members of the RAF's Red Arrows aerobatic team.
Five-time Olympic Gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave CBE, who champions In the Zone, explains: "A good performance is not only about being in peak condition, it's about how to prepare yourself, the different mental pressures to overcome and understanding how your body works. In the Zone recreates some of these elements in an accessible way so that the whole family can enjoy and be inspired."
'In the Zone' is part of a wider initiative from the Wellcome Trust to create a science legacy from London 2012. In addition to the travelling exhibition, the Trust has sent free sports science experiment kits packed with all the equipment and resources needed to conduct curriculum-linked investigations about the human body to every school and further education college in the UK.
Designed to inspire young people aged 4-19 to understand how their own bodies work, 31 000 kits have been distributed in total. Other aspects of the initiative include an In the Zone roadshow with pop-up sports science experiment demonstrations across the UK and a programme of high-energy, action-packed live science shows from the Science Junkies.
The In the Zone initiative is one of the exceptional projects to have been awarded the Inspire Mark from the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and is a key strand of the Practical Learning theme of Get Set+, the official London 2012 education programme.
'In the Zone' will be in Victoria Park as part of BT London Live from 27 July to 12 August, 11.00-19.00 daily. After BT London Live, 'In the Zone' continues its UK tour to Anglesey Agricultural Show (14-15 August) and Northampton Balloon Fiesta (17-19 August).
