Filthy Finale for Dirt Season

31 August 2011

The Wellcome Trust’s Dirt Season reaches a filthy finale in Glasgow this September, with the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery and Glasgow Science Centre laying on a feast of dirty treats.

From middens to microbiology, the Hunterian's programme is inspired by their astonishing science and medical collections - as well as the world-class research being undertaken in the University of Glasgow - and takes in historical forensics, the impact of the filthy industrial city on its residents, and even Scotland's encounters with tropical diseases.

From 2 September to 6 September, the Hunterian Art Gallery, and various venues across the University campus and city, will be dishing out dirty tea parties and activities covering waste management, forensic archaeology, signs of disease, hygiene and hand washing. A parasitology poster display, science busking, lunchtime talks, Café Scientifique events, city tours and infectiously filthy films are also on offer. Get the dirt on all these events at the Hunterian website.

And before the city has a chance to clean up, the Glasgow Science Centre will bring our Dirt Season to a suitably messy end with a weekend of grimy family fun from 23 September to 26 September. Kids can see whether they can stomach the Disgusting Digestion adventure, create mucky masterpieces of their own and take part in infection detection experiments. They can also meet the resident Madagascan hissing cockroaches and find out what dirt can tell us about creatures of the past.

Visitors can unearth the secret lives of viruses in the beautiful Molecular Machines display and meet experts who will guide them through the dirt-dealing worlds of immunology, parasites and infections. Morning master classes will run for adults, exploring cutting-edge research on dirt, and a Living with Dirt photo competition is underway online, where you can enter your dirtiest snaps through the Glasgow Science Centre website. Find out more at the dirty weekends page.
