Trust award brings science to Jamie’s Dream School

16 March 2011

The Channel 4 documentary series ‘Jamie’s Dream School’ continues tonight, with contributions to the scientific content from the Wellcome Trust.

In the programme, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver assembles a group of inspirational experts to try to encourage learning in 20 teenagers who left school with few qualifications.

The show was part funded by a Wellcome Trust People Award of £30 000. This money was put towards the preparation of Professor Robert Winston's science lessons, as well as the creation of the 'biosphere' to be seen in tonight's episode. The latter is run by scientist Jayne Poynter, who lived in a biosphere for two years. She looks to move science out of the classroom with four of the teenagers living in their own biosphere for three days to understand how ecosystems work.

The programme can be seen tonight on Channel 4 at 21.00. It can also be seen, along with the previous episodes, on the 4OD service.
