Applications are now open for the joint Academy of Medical Sciences and Wellcome Trust Starter Grants for Clinical Lecturers scheme, which supports clinicians active in research at an early stage of their career.

The Starter Grants for Clinical Lecturers scheme helps clinical lecturers who have recently completed their MD or PhD maintain momentum in their research. Applications are now open for this year.

The application deadline is 7 March 2011. For more information and to apply for the scheme, see the Academy of Medical Science's scheme page.

Starter Grants for Clinical Lecturers provide between £15 000 and £30 000 over two years, to contribute to the costs of research consumables. The crucial pilot data that will be generated should ensure that this important group of investigators enhance their competitiveness for applications for longer-term funding.

From this round of funding, the scheme will be supplemented by support from the British Heart Foundation. Dr Shannon Amoils of the British Heart Foundation said: "We're delighted to be working with Wellcome and the AMS to give Clinical Lecturers the funding they need to 'kick start' important research in cardiovascular medicine."
