New Chair sought for the UK Biobank Ethics and Governance Council

13 September 2010

Are you interested in joining the Council that overseas the ethical and governance aspects of the UK Biobank’s work?

The UK Biobank is a long-term project to build a resource for future research to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and the promotion of health.

The ethical and governance aspects of this major project are overseen by an independent group, the Ethics and Governance Council. The Council provides advice to UK Biobank's Board of Directors and reports publicly on the conformance of the project with its Ethics and Governance Framework and the interests of participants and the public.

The Council is now looking for a new Chair with significant expertise in one or more of the following areas: law, bioethics, philosophy, biomedical science, medical research, social science, healthcare, public health, public involvement, public policy, epidemiology, information security systems and corporate social responsibility. Applicants should have excellent judgement, outstanding analytical skills and an ability to address complex issues in a collaborative way. In addition, the Chair will demonstrate leadership qualities and will have experience of chairing advisory or decision-making bodies that act on behalf of the public.

The Council currently meets up to four times a year, and hosts one public meeting a year where it reports on its activities and invites questions.

If you are interested in applying, please contact Sonia Matthew for an information pack: s.matthew@wellcome.ac.uk. Or, if you would like to discuss the opportunity further, please contact the Council's secretary, Adrienne Hunt: a.hunt@wellcome.ac.uk.

The deadline for applications is 6 October 2010. Interviews will be held on 19 November.
