Funding to boost veterinary research careers
1 September 2010

In September 2007, the Trust launched a new £10.7 million initiative to support a range of activities designed to encourage veterinarians to take up research careers. The award included provision for three fellowship schemes, which enable veterinarians to develop a career combining both laboratory-based research and clinical practice.
The work of the Wellcome Trust is not just about promoting research to improve human health - our mission specifically includes research into animal health too. Our veterinary fellowships schemes exist to help veterinarians develop a career combining both laboratory-based research and clinical practice. These fellowships, which are awarded annually, are now open for 2010.
Veterinary Research Entry Fellowships provide support for veterinary graduates who wish to undertake research leading to a Master's degree. Candidates should have an intercalated degree and/or a demonstrable interest in research. Applications are also welcome from candidates who have had a career break and now wish to acquire research experience. The closing date for applications is 7 February 2011.
Integrated Training Fellowships for Veterinarians provide support for veterinary graduates who wish to develop a career in biomedical research by obtaining a laboratory-based PhD and clinical training. Candidates should have an intercalated degree and/or a demonstrable interest in research. The closing date for preliminary applications is 12 November 2010.
Veterinary Postdoctoral Fellowships provide support for veterinary postdoctoral researchers to develop their independence by undertaking high-quality laboratory research, sponsored by a UK veterinary school. The closing date for preliminary applications is 12 November 2010.
We see these fellowships as an opportunity to encourage collaborations across the biomedical sciences, so we particularly encourage applications where research projects are based in, or involve collaboration with, a team carrying out basic research.
Please visit the University of Liverpool website for further information about the schools and potential research projects. For more information see our funding pages or email vets@wellcome.ac.uk.
