New scheme to fund global health trials open

4 June 2010

The Trust has joined forces with other UK funders to offer support for late-stage trials of health interventions designed to improve health in low- and middle-income countries.

The Wellcome Trust, the UK Medical Research Council and the UK Department for International Development have together committed up to £12 million per year for the next three years to fund late-stage trials of health interventions that, by addressing major causes of mortality or morbidity, will help improve health in low- and middle-income countries.

The new scheme, which aims to strengthen the evidence base for improving health in these countries, is now open. Academic groups based either in the countries where the studies will take place or in the UK are invited to submit proposals.

The scope of the scheme includes, but is not limited to, behavioural interventions, complex interventions, disease management, drugs, vaccines and hygiene and diagnostic strategies. The scheme is focused on late-stage (phase III/ IV) efficacy and effectiveness trials.

For more information on the scheme visit the Medical Research Council online or email jointglobalhealthtrials@headoffice.mrc.ac.uk. You should register your interest in applying by 13 August 2010, and the submission deadline for outline applications is 16.00 BST, 15 September 2010.
