'Big Picture: Addiction' out now

26 May 2010

The latest issue in our ‘Big Picture’ series explores the science behind addiction.

Addiction is everywhere in popular culture: from news stories to celebrity magazines, and even reality TV shows. But what does addiction actually mean? How does being addicted affect your mind, body and everyday life? What might the future of addiction hold?

These questions and more are examined in ‘Big Picture: Addiction’, the Wellcome Trust's free educational resource for teachers and learners, which has just been published. You can download a PDF [1.6MB] of the issue or visit our order page to order print copies of any 'Big Picture' issue and subscribe to receive each issue as it's published.

There's more to 'Big Picture' than the magazine - we've created a wealth of extra addiction resources online, including lesson plans to help students examine how the media reports drug harms [PDF 144KB] and explore the future of addiction [PDF 616KB].

Online you can also watch video interviews with a recovering gambling addict, with an addiction therapist, and with the parents of heroin addicts.

You can browse an image gallery on the history of addiction and read exclusive online articles on addiction in books and films, drugs and the brain, how Professor Mark Griffiths studies gamblers, cognitive enhancers and drug classification.

Let us know what you think of this issue, along with any other comments, questions or suggestions you have about the series, by emailing the 'Big Picture' team on bigpicture@wellcome.ac.uk.
