Museum receives ship-shape support

25 September 2009

Mary Rose
The Mary Rose Trust has received £1 million from us towards its new £35m museum for the 16th-century warship.

The Capital Award will help to establish sections of the museum focusing on the medicine practised on board the Mary Rose, as seen through the eyes of a Barber-Surgeon. The Barber-Surgeon's cabin will be reconstructed to include a new character case and a reconstruction of the heads of key members of the ship's crew. The award will also cover a 'medicine aboard' display, and the construction and fit-out of the secondary collection, including racking, displays and environmental controls.

"We believe that the Mary Rose is a great vehicle for science education and a new and exciting way to engage young people with modern biomedical science," said Clare Matterson, Director of Medicine, Society and History at the Wellcome Trust.
