Studying the senses

Hearing aid
A variety of grants have been made recently through our Neuroscience and Mental Health stream.

Among the programme grants awarded was one to Professor Guy Richardson at the University of Sussex. He and colleagues will study mice with genetic mutations to investigate how two key parts of the ear form, and how heritable genetic defects can affect this process and cause progressive hearing loss.

Also awarded a programme grant, Professor Jon Driver at University College London and colleagues will use non-invasive methods to explore causal interactions between remote but interconnected parts of the human brain. The way the brain processes vision and touch can be altered by paying attention to a stimulus - so-called attention modulation. This research should further our understanding of this process in both healthy and damaged brains.
