Four current Wellcome Trust Fellows and a number of past and current recipients of Trust funding are among the 40 leading UK researchers and clinicians who have been elected to the Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2009.

Trust Fellows Professors Patrick Chinnery (Newcastle University), William Earnshaw (University of Edinburgh), Vikram Patel (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) and Peter St George-Hyslop (University of Cambridge) were among the medical scientists elected to the Academy for “outstanding contributions to the advancement of medical science, for innovative application of scientific knowledge or for their conspicuous service to healthcare”.

Professor Chinnery (pictured), a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow, said of his election: “I am absolutely delighted to receive this honour, especially at such a young age. I recognise that the Academy is doing groundbreaking work in promoting clinical academia in the UK.”

This latest election brings the total number of Fellows of the Academy to 947. The new Fellows will be welcomed in an Admission Ceremony at the end of June. See the Academy’s website for more details.
