Peter Ratcliffe prize

26 March 2009

Peter Ratcliffe
Professor Peter Ratcliffe, Head of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford, has been awarded the 2009 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine.

Professor Ratcliffe, who has received Trust funding for almost 20 years, was recognised for his research into the mechanisms used by cells to detect oxygen levels. He shares the prize with Swiss-American researcher Michael Hall. They will each receive 700 000 Swiss Francs (£420 000), the bulk of which will be used for their research, at an award ceremony in Geneva in April 2009.

The prize is awarded annually to outstanding biomedical researchers in Europe, to encourage the continuation of research projects that are of major importance to medicine. Previous winners include Trust Governor Professor Adrian Bird.
