Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance launches its first fellowships
27 November 2008

Operated as an independent, public charitable trust, the new Alliance aims to deliver a programme of research fellowship schemes to support current and future leaders of Indian biomedical science.
Applications for the Early Career Fellowships and Intermediate Fellowships are now open.
Early Career Fellowships will support the most promising newly qualified postdoctoral researchers, to help them to make an early start in launching their independent research careers, working in the best laboratories in India.
Excellent postdoctoral scientists can apply for Intermediate Fellowships, which will enable them to undertake high-quality research and establish themselves as independent researchers in India. Candidates must have made intellectual contributions to their research field.
The Alliance has also appointed a CEO, Anuradha Lohia, Professor of Biochemistry at the Bose Institute, Kolkata.
"We at the Alliance are really looking forward to bringing back a lot of talent to India,” says Professor Lohia. “I'm very glad the Wellcome Trust and the Department of Biotechnology have given me this opportunity. It’s an immense responsibility and I’d really like to be able to succeed."
The £80m Alliance will be jointly funded by the Government of India’s Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Wellcome Trust over five years. Annually, the Alliance is expected to award around 40 Early Career Fellowships, 20 Intermediate Fellowships and 15 Senior Research Fellowships.
