New members sought for UK Biobank’s Ethics and Governance Council
16 September 2008

The UK Biobank is collecting information and samples from half a million people to build a resource for future research to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and the promotion of health.
The ethical and governance aspects of this major project are overseen by an independent group, the Ethics and Governance Council. The Council provides advice to UK Biobank’s Board of Directors and reports publicly on the conformance of the project with its Ethics and Governance Framework and the interests of participants and the public.
The Council is now looking for at least three new members with significant expertise in one or more of the following areas: information security systems, epidemiological study design and biomarkers, public involvement, corporate social responsibility or public policy. Applications will also be considered from people with expertise in bioethics, philosophy, biomedical science, law, medical research, social science, health care or public health.
Applicants should have senior level experience on advisory or decision-making bodies acting on behalf of the public.
The Council currently meets up to four times a year, and hosts around two public meetings a year where it reports on its activities and invites questions.
If you are interested in applying, please contact Sonia Matthew - s.matthew@wellcome.ac.uk - for an information pack. Or, if you would like to discuss the opportunity further, please contact the Council’s secretary, Adrienne Hunt - a.hunt@wellcome.ac.uk.
The deadline for applications is 24 September 2008.
