UK Biobank Ethics and Governance Council public meeting12 November 2007 |
Want to know more about the ethical issues surrounding research databases?
The UK Biobank Ethics and Governance Council is holding a public presentation and discussion on Monday 3 December 2007 at the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, Beaumont Street, Oxford.
At the meeting the Council will report on its activities and invite questions about its work. A representative from UK Biobank will also be present.
UK Biobank is a long-term project to build a major resource of data and samples with the participation of 500 000 individuals aged 40-69. The project was launched earlier this year, with Oxford being one of the first centres of recruitment. Over 13 000 people from this region have agreed to participate in the project, which aims to recruit nationally over the next few years.
This resource will support a diverse range of research intended to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses (such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and dementia), and the promotion of health throughout society.
The UK Biobank Ethics and Governance Council is an independent monitoring body that advises on the ethical framework under which UK Biobank operates.
The meeting will take place from 18.00–19.30, followed by a drinks reception from 19.30–20.30.
