Update: The X-ray files

9 April 2007

The head of the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC), Professor Aled Edwards, has an unusual sideline: advising on a Canadian sci-fi television series.

'ReGenesis' is a drama about the North American Biotechnology Advisory Commission (NorBAC), a fictional organisation with a lab based in Toronto, which investigates the medical and ethical dilemmas raised by advances in biotechnology.

Each hour-long episode follows the team of international scientists at NorBAC as they tackle problems related to bioterrorism, genetically modified organisms, patented genes, the extension of life and other complex issues.

A guide to the science behind each episode is posted on the Ontario Genomics Institute's website.

In 2005, the series won a Gemini Award – the Canadian equivalent of a US Emmy. Its third season began 1 April 2007.

The SGC is an international collaboration, part-funded by the Wellcome Trust, which aims to unravel the structure of medically important proteins and place them in the public domain.
