Musicians' physiology, accurate representation of war wounds and 3D models of body organs are the varied foci of new Engaging Science People Awards.

Physiologist Alan Watson at Cardiff University will work with Kevin Price of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to develop workshops to raise musicians' awareness of anatomy and human biology, particularly breathing.

Julia Hyland at the University of Birmingham, by contrast, will be extending her previous work on historically authentic representations of wounds and body ailments ranging from smallpox to syphilis, which has entertained and informed a variety of audiences.

And bringing the science bang up to date, Ik Soo Lim of the University of Wales, Bangor, will be leading a group of computer scientists and medics developing 3D medical anatomy images for school students to colour digitally. They will also be able to use 3D printing technology to make actual models of the structures.

People Awards provide support of up to £30 000 for public engagement activities.
