Update: Wellcome Library move

16 January 2007

The Wellcome Library is very pleased to announce that in April 2007 we will be returning to our former premises at 183 Euston Road, London. The Library will form a core activity of Wellcome Collection, an exciting new public venue. Comprising temporary and permanent exhibitions, the Wellcome Library, a Conference Centre, café, bookshop and more, Wellcome Collection will take a thoughtful and experimental look at medicine, life and art, rooting science in the broad context of health and wellbeing.

Within Wellcome Collection, the Library will have considerably more space and will offer new services and facilities to users. The Library, along with a new café, will be among the first activities of the new venue to open to the public.

Key timings

  • To facilitate our return to 183, the Library will close for a three-week period from 16.00 on Saturday 24 March. It will re-open at 10.00 on Monday April 16 2007.
  • To reduce inconvenience to readers, our opening hours will be extended in the weeks running up to the move. Further news on this will be available shortly.
  • Readers are strongly advised to keep an eye on the Library website for further information and updates.

And just some of what you can look forward to…

  • New opening hours: in response to user demand, and for a one-year trial period, we will be extending our opening hours from Monday April 16 as follows: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10.00 to 18.00; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.00 to 20.00; Saturdays from 10.00 to 16.00.
  • Expanded open access collections: the number of browsable open access books and journals will rise from the current 70 000 volumes to c.150 000.
  • Bright new reading spaces: a significant expansion of study spaces with a mix of comfortable and well-lit formal and informal seating areas.
  • Rare Materials Room: an attractive and spacious new study room.
  • Viewing Room: a new facility in which visiting groups can view materials from the Library collections and listen to expert talks by Library and other staff.
  • E-Learning Room: a space where users can discover more about our many electronic resources.
  • Self-service copying: where there is no risk of damage to Library materials, users will now be able to do much of their own copying on self-service machines.
  • WiFi: all public access areas of the Library will be WiFi-enabled and we will more than double the current number of public access terminals.
