Professor Nick White, Chairman of the Wellcome Trust's Major Overseas Programme in South-east Asia, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2006.

Fellowships were also awarded to two researchers associated with new Wellcome Trust Centres – Professor Austin Smith (Wellcome Trust Centre for Stem Cell Biology, University of Cambridge) and Professor Karl Friston (Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging, University College London).
Several researchers with major Wellcome Trust grants were also recognised: Professor Peter Donnelly (University of Oxford), Professor Richard Jackson (University of Cambridge), Professor Malik Peiris (University of Hong Kong) and Professor Helen Saibil (Birkbeck College London).
Among other notable achievements this year:
Dr Nick Day, Director of the Wellcome Trust Major Overseas Programme in Thailand: Chalmers Medal (Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene).
Professor Ray Dolan, Head of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging, UCL: Golden Brain Award 2007 (from The Minerva Foundation).
Professor Jeremy Farrar, Director of the Wellcome Trust Major Overseas Programme in Vietnam: Frederick Murgatroyd Prize for contributions to Tropical Medicine (Royal College of Physicians, London) and the Bailey Ashford Medal for Tropical Medicine (American Society for Tropical Medicine).
Professor Masud Husain, Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Science at the Institute of Neurology: Graham Bull Prize in Clinical Science (from the Royal College of Physicians, London).
Stephen Lawn, Wellcome Trust Clinical Career Development Fellow: the International Union Against TB and Lung Disease annual scientific prize.
