Funding: Training fellowships

1 November 2006

Two researchers from developing countries have successfully competed for training fellowships in tropical medicine.

Dr Anthony Kebba, based at the Medical Research Council/Uganda Virus Research Institute (MRC/UVRI) Uganda Research Unit on AIDS, has been awarded a Research Training Fellowship in Tropical Medicine to study the T-cell response to HIV.

Malawi-born researcher Dr Masautso Chaponda has also been awarded a Research Training Fellowship in Tropical Medicine, to study reactions to the drug nevirapine within the Malawian population. Nevirapine is one of three drugs used to treat HIV infection, but some patients react to the drug, developing skin rashes or liver damage, which can be severe and occasionally fatal.
