Update: egrants
30 March 2006
eGrants, the Wellcome Trust's online application system, has been improved as a result of feedback from a participant survey and issues identified by the Trust.
The eGrants system enables applicants to apply for grants online. It provides workflow to steer the application through the university administration's approval steps until final submission to the Trust.
From 1 October 2006 it will be compulsory for most applicants to submit their applications via our eGrants system.
A questionnaire was sent to over 1000 people, including institutional administrators, those who had submitted forms using the new system and those who were new to the system. In total, 374 completed responses were received.
Of those eGrants users who responded, over 90 per cent were either fairly or very satisfied with the eGrants system of submission. Users found the system to be very stable and easy to use, with a clear layout and useful guidance provided guidance if needed. Perhaps most importantly, nearly 80 per cent of those who had experience of both the old-style application forms and eGrants felt the new system was better.

The feedback provided in the survey has helped the Trust identify improvements that will be introduced over the next few months.
Among other things eGrants will be improved to allow:
- uploading of PDF documents
- the university administration to opt for a single-stage submission process
- easier selection of coapplicants and collaborators
- authority for heads of departments and principal applicants to delegate some functions to others.
A further project is underway to enhance all the grants processing systems used in the Trust, including eGrants, and as a result further improvements to the eGrants system will be introduced in 2007.
