Update: 'Trafalgar' wins Royal Television Society Programme Award

22 March 2006

The film 'Trafalgar Battle Surgeon', watched by some 1.4 million viewers on Channel 4 last summer, has won a Royal Television Society Award.

Part-funded by the Wellcome Trust, the film explored the role of Sir William Beatty, surgeon on HMS Victory, and Navy doctors in the battle. The superior health and fitness of the British crewmen may have been an important factor in the eventual British victory.

The Society said of the film:

"The jury admired the winning entry for its rich, characterful and unexpected take on well-known events. Crisp, passionate and hugely entertaining, it struck the senses like a well-aimed cannonball."

Perhaps this had something to do with the epic performance of Tony Woods, Programme Manager for Medical Humanities, who starred as an extra in battle scenes.

The Awards were hosted by Phillip Schofield at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on Tuesday 14 March 2006.
