Update: Witnessing history

7 December 2005

Two major advances in medicine are described by those who were there, in two new Witness Seminar transcripts published by the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL.

These two new volumes cover the understanding of the role of platelets in coronary heart disease, and the introduction of a short course of antibiotics for the treatment of tuberculosis. Both relied heavily on the outcomes of large randomised controlled trials.

Witness Seminars bring together key individuals to discuss major medical developments, capturing a unique insight into historical events. The discussions are transcribed, annotated and published in the Wellcome Witnesses to Twentieth Century Medicine series. These volumes are freely available to download. Hard copies at £6/US$10 plus postage can be ordered from Amazon and all good booksellers.
