Pulse awards
5 December 2005
Large-scale puppets are one of the typically inventive approaches being used in newly funded Pulse projects.
The Pulse scheme supports innovative projects using drama or other artistic approaches to excite and interest young people in biomedical science. Such approaches are particularly valuable where young people have been left uninspired by more conventional science lessons.
The puppets are being used by theatre group The Wright Stuff to portray the life of Robert Louis Stevenson, who was fascinated by the nature of the human mind and criminality in particular. The project aims to stimulate debate on schizophrenia and mental health in modern society.
Among other fascinating projects, Oh!Art will be exploring hot issues in biomedical science as perceived by young Bengali and Somali women in Tower Hamlets, PVA MediaLab will work with film-maker Peter Snelling to enable students at a school in Dorchester to make a film about DNA, and Action Dog Productions will draw upon Hollywood and Bollywood films as inspiration for a film about dangerous microbes.
The next deadline for Pulse applications will be in spring 2006.
