New 3Rs website and funding

15 September 2005

The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) has launched a new website. The site is designed to help scientists apply the best possible standards of animal welfare in their research.

The NC3Rs was established in September 2004 to provide a UK focus for the advancement of the 3Rs – the basic principles that underpin the humane use of animals in scientific research. The Centre aims to promote the development and implementation of the 3Rs in biomedical, biological and veterinary research. It is part funded by the Wellcome Trust.

The website gives information on the Centre's funding schemes, programmes, publications and meetings, and includes an events calendar and annotated links to online databases, websites, journal articles, legislation and other publications that will help scientists apply the 3Rs in their research.

Researchers can now access details of the following initiatives, which are now receiving applications:

Joint NC3Rs / LASA Small Awards Scheme
Awards of up to £2k will be made for research and training projects in animal welfare and the 3Rs. Deadline: 28 October 2005.

3Rs Prize
A new NC3Rs prize of up to £10k for a piece of published work which advances the 3Rs. Deadline: 4 November 2005

3Rs Funding Scheme
Funds available for hypothesis-driven and applied 3Rs research projects. Deadline: 13 February 2006.
