Wellcome grant helps preserve unique coalmining archive

1 November 2004

A Wellcome Trust award to the South Wales Coalfield Collection will help preserve and open up a unique archive documenting a vanishing way of life. The collection, held in University of Wales Swansea, was established in 1969 to preserve the documentary records of the mining community of South Wales.

Alongside a substantial collection of printed and manuscript material, it now includes 4000 photographs and over 200 hours of video footage, and provides an invaluable picture of life on the South Wales Coalfield during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The grant was made through the Research Resources in Medical History scheme.
