New funding for Malawi

23 November 2004

The Trust has made awards totalling £2.3 million for research in Malawi on malaria, HIV/AIDS, TB and other bacterial and viral infections, and anaemia. The awards, to the University of Liverpool and Liverpool School of Tropical Medical, will support the Malawi–Liverpool– Wellcome Trust Research Programme, which is based at the University of Malawi College of Medicine and the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre.

The three awards include ‘core funding’ to support the programme’s facilities in Malawi and Liverpool and fellowship support for Professor Malcolm Molyneux’s research into severe malaria. The Malawi-based programme is associated with the University of Liverpool’s Wellcome Centre for Research in Clinical Tropical Medicine, directed by Professor Peter Winstanley.

The Wellcome Trust has also provided an additional £300 000 for training of young doctors and researchers – part of its commitment to capacity building in Malawi.
