Streams online

5 September 2004

From 1 October 2004, the Wellcome Trust will establish six research 'streams':

  • Immunology and Infectious Disease
  • Populations and Public Health
  • Neuroscience and Mental Health
  • Physiological Sciences
  • Molecules, Genes and Cells
  • Medical Humanities

These streams will include a strategy committee and related funding committees. Twice a year, each strategy committee will consider the portfolio of support provided by the Wellcome Trust in its area of research and make recommendations to the Board of Governors about possible future directions or opportunities to help maximise the Trust’s ability to achieve its mission. Funding committees will continue to make decisions on grants applications.

The Trust continues to fund work in public engagement and technology transfer, and the new arrangements will facilitate integration of these activities with the research funding.

To aid grantholders in the biomedical sciences through this transitional period, a leaflet and website have been produced, outlining the key changes and the rationale behind the streams approach. A copy of the leaflet has been included in issue 39 of Wellcome News.

The Trust has also made a number of changes to its grants management processes, with the aim of providing greater flexibility for grantholders and reducing administrative burdens for grantholders, universities and the Trust. Details of these changes can also be found in the leaflet and website.
