New Trust HQ opens

26 August 2004

The Wellcome Trust moved into the 21st century with the opening of its new, state-of-the-art headquarters at 215 Euston Road. Most Trust staff were relocated in mid-August into the new ten-storey glass building adjacent to the Wellcome Building.

The new building was awarded an ‘Excellent’ rating in an independent BREEAM assessment for its high environmental standards. It consists of two parallel blocks separated by a linear atrium and joined by a stunning curved glass roof. The extensive use of glass allows copious amounts of natural daylight to reach the floors and a ventilated ’skin’ reduces solar gain and heat loss. A combination of ventilation and chilled ceilings provide a comfortable working environment.

The Wellcome Library, previously housed in the Wellcome Building, has moved to 210 Euston Road where it will remain until spring 2006 when it moves back into the refurbished Wellcome Building.

As part of the transformation process, the refurbished Wellcome Building will boast improved visitor facilities, a new library and exhibition spaces. It will also feature expanded conference facilities, forum space plus a café and a bookshop as it becomes the main base for the Trust’s exciting programme of public-facing activities.
