Dr Shanthi Ameratunga
Shanthi Ameratunga is a Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology at the School of Population Health, University of Auckland. During her early work as a paediatrician, she decided to pursue a career researching the causes and consequences of unintentional trauma to help prevent the suffering among those affected by injuries.
She received a training fellowship to work with Robyn Norton at the University of Auckland (now Professor of Public Health, The George Institute for International Health, Sydney) and in the USA. She graduated from the Johns Hopkins University with a Masters in Public Health, the John C Hume Award for 'academic excellence and professional promise' and a postdoctoral fellowship. Since returning to New Zealand, she has focused on epidemiological and qualitative studies investigating the broader determinants of injury and injury-related disability.
Dr Ameratunga serves on the editorial board of Injury Prevention (BMJ Publishing Group) and several national and international research review panels. A Sri Lankan by birth and ethnicity, she is committed to expanding the workforce capacity to tackle the major public health burden due to injury in low- and middle-income countries. She leads the TRIP project in collaboration with Professors Rod Jackson (University of Auckland) and Sitaleki Finau (Fiji School of Medicine).
