Value in people

The first Wellcome Trust 'Value in People' awards have been made to 27 universities. The aim of the awards, which range from £100 000 to £250 000, is to help universities recruit, retain and develop the careers of key academic and research staff.

'Value in People' awards will enable universities to respond rapidly to opportunities that require modest amounts of money. The awards could provide bridging funds until a university post or fellowship becomes available, help plug a gap between contracts or give short-term funding for non-biologists to work in biomedicine.

The Trust has committed up to £30 million to 'Value in People' grants over five years, to 27 universities who were in the list of the top 30 Trust-funded universities at least twice in the last five years. Awards in 2004-2007 will be subject to the selected universities' continued success in attracting Trust funding and appropriate use of funds in previous years.

'Value in People' awards were part of a raft of initiatives launched by the Trust in conjunction with the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review in July 2002.
