Topping out at Hinxton
20 October 2003
Construction of the extension to the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus reached a major milestone in October, with the completion of the concrete frame of the new laboratory accommodation that will house the Sanger Institute's postgenomic research activities.
To mark the occasion a 'topping-out' ceremony was held at the construction site in Hinxton on 15 October, attended by Governors and senior staff of the Trust, local councillors and officials, the construction teams and staff from the Genome Campus.
Dr Michael Morgan, retired Chief Executive of the Genome Campus, who worked on the plans for the Genome Campus extension for many years, finished off the work with a special trowel and Dr Mark Walport, Director of the Trust, unveiled a commemorative plaque.
With the laboratory structures in place the construction teams can now forge ahead with erecting and fitting out the remainder of the building, which will ultimately result in state-of-the-art facilities for Sanger Institute scientists. The new development will also include a sophisticated data centre, research support facility, offices and ancillary accommodation. The remodelled grounds of the Genome Campus include a wetland area due to become a nature reserve.
