New technology transfer funding

The Wellcome Trust has launched a new technology transfer initiative, to help ensure practical medical and veterinary benefits are realised from its funding of biomedical research.

The new activities will continue and develop the work begun by Catalyst BioMedica Ltd, the subsidiary company established by the Wellcome Trust. The primary objective will be to progress promising lines of research until they reach a point at which they can compete for alternative forms of investment, such as venture capital, or can be taken forward through licensing agreements or other partnerships with the commercial sector.

Technology Transfer at the Wellcome Trust aims to work closely with researchers, university technology transfer offices, the private sector and commercial bodies. Its work will be based on the recognition that industry has a vital role to play in delivering healthcare advances, built on the foundations laid by the academic research sector.

Central to the technology transfer initiative are two new schemes - University Translation Awards and Strategic Translation Awards. The former are available in open competition and will be managed by the principal investigators and university technology transfer offices; awards are likely to be up to £300 000.The latter awards will be made in areas of strategic importance to the Trust and will be managed by principal investigators working with Wellcome technology transfer staff at the Trust; awards are likely to be up to £500 000.
