New sciart scheme

31 January 2003

The Wellcome Trust has launched a new sciart scheme as part of its Engaging Science grants programme. The scheme will support projects uniting the arts and sciences in imaginative, unorthodox arts projects that will inspire audiences to think about the wider impact of biomedical science upon people's lives.

The new scheme combines two previous funding schemes: Science on Stage and Screen (screen-based and performing arts productions) and the consortium-funded sciart scheme (all art forms).

There are two kinds of sciart award. Research and Development Awards (up to £15 000) support the development of an idea in its formative stages. There could have two possible outcomes: either 'blue skies' research, or small-scale productions, including prototypes, artworks, performances, film/videos, broadcast proposals, work-in-progress, websites, and CD-ROMs. The deadline for applications is 25 April 2003.

Production Awards (in the region of £100 000) will be awarded to substantial projects likely to make a significant national impact on the public engagement with science. They can be used to fund major activities such as conferences, art projects, programmes for TV and radio, theatre, film and video, and public performance. The deadline for applications is 25 July 2003.
