National network tender launched
1 February 2003
The tendering process has been launched for a national network of science learning centres, a £50 million joint venture between the Wellcome Trust and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES).
The national network - comprising a national centre linked to several regional centres - will enable science teachers to enhance their professional skills by learning more about contemporary scientific ideas, undergoing training in effective teaching approaches, and gaining experience of new scientific techniques.
The aim is to enhance science teaching, to inspire pupils by providing them with a more exciting, intellectually stimulating and relevant science education, and to raise morale in the teaching profession.
Science teachers hold the key to inspire, enthuse and educate young people. UK science education ranks among the finest in the world but the speed of scientific development poses new challenges - how to stay up to date with contemporary ideas, knowledge and techniques.
The country's future health and wealth depend on the continued production of world-class scientists and researchers. Equally, science itself presents new challenges, raising questions about our values, beliefs and the choices we make in our lives as individuals and as a society. Such challenges also demand that teachers are confident to face new ideas and to encourage not only a sense of wonder and amazement in our young people, but also a critical awareness.
Organisations are being invited to tender for either the National Centre (which will be funded by the Wellcome Trust) or for one (or more) of nine Regional Centres (supported by the DfES).
